Power Rankings (week 2)

September 10, 2008 by Steel Haven

 1 ( 4)   Dallas Cowboys   1-0
Pains me to put them on top. Constantly seeing Romo and Simpson in the tabloids makes me despise them even more. If that is possible.
 2 ( 6)   Pittsburgh Steelers   1-0
Maybe these are your father's Steelers. Return of the dominating defense and running game was in evidence on the opening weekend. Parker scored 3 touchdowns in the first game after scoring 2 all of last season. Woodley had a coming out party in his first start with a sack and interception. His presence helped free up Harrison on the opposite side for 3 sacks and a forced fumble.
 3 ( 7)   New York Giants   1-0
Manning the younger and Burress picked up where they left off. Jacobs is a beast.
 4 ( 1)   New England Patriots   1-0
Needed a last minute red-zone stand to beat the abysmal Chiefs after Brady's injury. Losing Brady for the season will test Belichick's genius label.
 5 ( 2)   Indianapolis Colts   0-1
Manning the elder was out of synch after missing the preseason. Loss of Saturday to injury was a huge factor in the interior of the offensive line. His possible early return would be key.
 6 (11)   Philadelphia Eagles   1-0
First real test comes Monday night in Dallas.
 7 ( 8)   Tennessee Titans   1-0
Again won in spite of VY10 instead of because of him. His injury and off the field issues will actually help on the field. At least in the short term. Offense clicked in the fourth quarter when Collins replaced him due to a sprained knee.
 8 (10)   New Orleans Saints   1-0
Got a desperately needed home win against a divisional opponent. Especially after last year's disasterous start. Losing Colston for at least a month makes the win all the more important.
 9 (13)   Green Bay Packers   1-0
Rodgers made Thompson and McCarthy look good for at least one week.
10 (15)   Carolina Panthers   1-0
A different team with Delhomme on the field.
11 ( 3)   San Diego Chargers   0-1
Demoralizing last second loss was not what the doctor ordered after last season's slow start. An ineffective Merriman decided after the game that he would submit to knee surgery and miss the rest of the season. Clearly the right decision.
12 (19)   Buffalo Bills   1-0
Dominated the Seahawks in all facets of the game. Return of left tackle Peters can only help.
13 (20)   Denver Broncos   1-0
Royal's breakout game makes him a scary compliment to the returning Marshall. Cutler has to be pleased.
14 ( 5)   Jacksonville Jaguars   0-1
Losing in Tennessee is nothing to be ashamed about. Losing both starting offensive guards for the season will be tough to overcome.
15 (16)   Arizona Cardinals   1-0
Whisenhunt seems to have them pointed in the right direction. Seattle's early season struggles present them with a major opportunity in a poor division.
16 ( 9)   Minnesota Vikings   0-1
Childress dropped to 0-5 against the Packers.
17 (17)   New York Jets   1-0
Favored this week at home over the Patriots. Rarely does an injury have as great an impact on a season as Brady's torn ACL.
18 (14)   Cleveland Browns   0-1
Defensive backs were as bad as advertised. Didn't help that the offseason attempts to improve the defensive line did not pay immediate dividends.
19 (28)   Chicago Bears   1-0
Dominating defense somewhat surprisingly returned after going missing for most of last year and this preseason.
20 (12)   Seattle Seahawks   0-1
Injuries to Burleson, Branch and Engram have grounded the passing game. Holmgren may end up wishing he had retired this past off season instead of coming back for another year.
21 (21)   Tampa Bay Buccaneers   0-1
Hung tough in front of a fired up crowd in New Orleans before falling short. Need to get more touches for Graham.
22 (27)   Baltimore Ravens   1-0
Dominated the Bengals. What that means is anybody's guess.
23 (18)   Houston Texans   0-1
Wind seemed to completely go out of their sails after they went for it on fourth and short from just over mid-field on the first drive and came up short.
24 (22)   Washington Redskins   0-1
Zorn's playcalling and clock management left something to be desired. Campbell does not look well suited to the west coast offense.
25 (23)   Cincinnati Bengals   0-1
A complete mess. I almost pity Palmer. Almost.
26 (30)   Atlanta Falcons   1-0
Michael who? Ryan's first pass as a pro was a 62 yard touchdown. Turner set the franchise single game rushing record in his first game outside of the shadow of LT by averaging an even 10 yards per carry on 22 carries.
27 (24)   St. Louis Rams   0-1
The promise of Linehan's first season has faded over the past 17 games. Hard to envision him surviving past this season.
28 (25)   Oakland Raiders   0-1
Need to get a lead to let McFadden and Fargas control the game on the ground. Playing from behind is clearly not their forte with the raw Russell and an abysmal receiver corps.
29 (29)   Miami Dolphins   0-1
Looked more organized and ready to play under the new regime. Still need to add talent although the veteran presence of Pennington should help.
30 (26)   Detroit Lions   0-1
Defense embarrassed by a team with a first year head coach, rookie starting quarterback and rookie left tackle. Obviously not a good sign.
31 (31)   San Fransisco 49ers   0-1
Martz and O'Sullivan failed to generate a passing game. Smith heading to the DL locks O'Sullivan in as the starter. Smith's shoulder injury could jeopardize his career ala Couch.
32 (32)   Kansas City Chiefs   0-1
Croyle's injury may be a blessing in disguise with Huard waiting in the wings. Although Edwards' desire to get Thigpen some reps could minimize the advantage.
