Mock Draft (Post-Senior Bowl/Pre-Combine Version)

January 28, 2004 by Steel Haven

Round 1

  1. San Diego Chargers

    QB Eli Manning - Mississippi

This pick should not really be a tough decision, although it will be portrayed that way by the Chargers front office. Manning has the skills and intelligence to make those around him better. The Chargers have plenty of needs on both sides of the ball and Marty Shottenheinmer is on such a short leash that there might be the temptation either to trade down or to draft a player that could be of more immediate help. In the end I would expect those making this decision including Shottenheimer to come to the same conclussion as the Bengals last year with Carson Palmer.
    • Needs: OT, DT, QB, WR, LB, DE
    • Other Options: WR L Fitzgerald, QB B Roethlisberger, trade down
    .
  2. Oakland Raiders

    WR Larry Fitzgerald - Pittsburgh

Trying to predict what Al Davis will do is never easy. The Raiders could go in any number of directions with this pick as they begin to retool an aging roster after a disappointing season. Fitzgerald provides value in this draft slot and fills a need opposite Jerry Porter. Arguably the best player in college football last season, he is a precise route runner with incredible body control. He does not possess blazing stopwatch speed, but has a knack for making the big play.
    • Needs: DT, S, WR, OT, LB, DE, QB
    • Hope might be available: QB E Manning
    • Other Options: QB B Roethlisberger, S S Taylor, trade down
    .
  3. Arizona Cardinals

    QB Ben Roethlisberger- Miami (OH)

A franchise QB to go along with new coach Dennis Green would add some much needed optimism to a franchise that has languished at the bottom of the standings for years. Roethlisberger has the size, arm strength, and mobility that teams dream about. He would have a chance to develop with some young skill position talent including Marcel Shipp, Anquan Boldin, and Bryant Johnson.
    • Needs: QB, CB, DT, S, OG, RB
    • Hoped might be available: WR L Fitzgerald, QB E Manning
    • Other Options: S S Taylor, trade down
    .
  4. New York Giants

    S Sean Taylor - Miami

Taylor is the most coveted defensive player in this draft despite playing a position on which most teams do not usually like to spend a high pick. He is a difference maker that should step into the starting lineup from day one and be a legitimate candidate for defensive rookie of the year. For a team with such glaring needs on the offensive line to pass on Gallery makes little sense, but GM Ernie Acorsi seems to believe that unit can be built through late round picks and free agent bargains. Should be interesting to see if new coach Tom Coughlin can change Acorsi's mind.
    • Needs: OT, OG, OLB, S, DL, RB, QB
    • Hope might be available: QB E Manning, QB B Roethlisberger
    • Other Options: OT R Gallery, DE K Udeze
    .
  5. Washington Redskins

    DE Kenechi Udeze - USC

The big news in Washington is that Joe Gibbs has decided to return to the NFL as the head coach of the Redskins. His presence should help change a front office dynamic that has been dysfunctional since Daniel Snyder bought the franchise. The Redskins defensive line has been awful and Gibbs understands that games are won in the trenches. Udeze has been rocketing up draft boards based on a breakout season for the AP National Champion Trojans culminated by a dominating performance in the Rose Bowl. He combines the ability to get to the QB with the bulk to hold up at the point of attack.
    • Needs: DE, DT, TE, RB, S, LB
    • Hope might be available: S S Taylor
    • Other Options: DT T Harris, RB S Jackson, TE K Winslow
    .
  6. Detroit Lions

RB Kevin Jones - Virginia Tech

The decision that must be made here is a perfect example of the quintessential draft dilemma of picking for need versus choosing the best player available. Jones is not universally viewed as being worthy of this lofty selection. He does however seem to be a perfect fit for the Lions. Jones is a homerun hitter with the speed and elusiveness to take it all the way on every carry. He would be a major upgrade on the collection of veteran backs currently employed in Detriot and serve the added benefit of helping to take pressure off Joey Harrington.
    • Needs: RB, OG, TE, CB, FS, WR
    • Hope might be available: S S Taylor
    • Other Options: OT R Gallery, TE K Winslow
    .
  7. Cleveland Browns *

    OT Robert Gallery - Iowa

Gallery is a master technician that goes about his job in a quiet manner. He will probably never be as physically dominant as top franchise LTs like Orlando Pace or Jonathon Ogden. That really shouldn't be viewed as a knock on him. Gallery's durability and work ethic should allow him to produce at a high level for years. The Browns have a desperate need on the offensive line and Gallery being available at this pick would be a godsend.
    • Needs: OL, TE, S, DT, FB, QB
    • Hope might be available: S S Taylor
    • Other Options: TE K Winslow
    .
  8. Atlanta Falcons *

    OT Shawn Andrews - Arkansas

Andrews is a huge, physically dominant RT that needs to keep his weight in check. Surprisingly athletic for his size, he should be able to stay at tackle although a move inside to RG would not be out of the question. The Falcons were more often than not out muscled on both sides of the line of scrimmage last season. Adding Andrews would not only benefit franchise QB Michael Vick, but also allow them to control the ball on offense to help keep an undersized defense fresh.
    • Needs: CB, OL, DL, WR
    • Hoped might be available: WR L Fitzgerald, S S Taylor
    • Other Options: DT T Harris, WR Ro Williams
    .
  9. Jacksonville Jaguars

    WR Roy Williams - Texas

Williams has the size and athleticism that make scouts drool. He drops to the Jaguars because of an inconsistent senior season marred by nagging injuries and poor QB play. Jimmy Smith turns 35 in February. Kevin Johnson was a nice pickup, but he is more possession receiver than big play threat. Williams would add another dimension to an offense with the strong armed Byron Leftwich at the helm.
    • Needs: WR, DE, CB, OLB, S, OT
    • Hope is available: S S Taylor, DE K Udeze
    • Other Options: DE W Smith, WR Re Williams, trade down
    .
  10. Houston Texans

    DE Tommie Harris - Oklahoma

Slightly undersized for a 4-3 DT, Harris is a nice fit at DE in the 3-4 defense. The Texans do not have a standout on the defensive line and clearly need an upgrade after finishing 31st in rushing defense. Harris is a high motor player with all the tools. A top recruit that played as a true freshman, he has been fighting double and triple teams throughout his college career.
    • Needs: DL, S, CB, LB, OT, FB
    • Hope might be available: S S Taylor
    • Other Options: NT V Wilfork
    .
  11. Pittsburgh Steelers

RB Steven Jackson - Oregon St

As a Steeler fan this is really my least favorite scenario. I am not a huge fan of first round runningbacks and believe solid talent can be found at the position later in the draft. That said, Jackson simply provides the most value at a position of immediate need at this point in the draft. A trade up for a QB appears too cost prohibitive and finding a partner to trade down for a CB will not be easy. Jackson looks like a nice fit if the Steelers want to return to the power running game. He is a durable wokhorse back with the power to run between the tackles and enough speed to turn the corner. Jackson is also a proven receiver having caught 44 passes this season.

I honestly though alot about switching this pick to Philip Rivers after his performance in the Senior Bowl. The Steelers have reportedly always been high on Rivers. NC State head coach Chuck Amato was actually Bill Cowher's position coach at the same school. Three things stopped me. The first was that Steven Jackson still provides solid value at this spot and the Steelers immediate need at RB is much greater than the need at QB. Maddox and Batch are both acceptable caretakers at the QB position. The Steelers have nothing at RB. The Steelers have consistently used their first round pick to fill an immediate, specific need in the Colbert/Cowher era. Of course the need at RB could be alleviated through free agency or a trade. The second reason was the specter of Drew Henson. Despite Aaron Boone's knee injury it still seems likely Henson will end up reaching a buyout agreement with the Yankees. Henson can simply not hit a curve ball. Henson has expressed an interest in playing for the Steelers and apparently that interest is mutual. There have been some rumors that Henson could be acquired for a 2005 second round pick. That would allow the Steelers to add a future franchise QB without sacrificing anything in the present. For a coach that wants to turn things around as quickly as possible that would have to be very tempting. The final reason is that a single performance in an all star game should really not cause a player's stock to rise quite this much. I had Rivers originally valued as a borderline 1st rounder that could be selected by the Dolpins as a slight reach with the 20th pick. I now think Rivers is a solid value at 20, but the 11th pick seems a bit high for him. That could still change if Rivers continues to increase his stock at the combine and in individual workouts.
    • Needs: CB, QB, RB, OT, OLB, FS, DE
    • Hope might be available: OT S Andrews, QB B Roethlisberger
    • Other Options: CB C Gamble, P Rivers, trade down
    .
  12. New York Jets

    WR Reggie Williams - Washington

The Jets really need to add speed and athletcism to the defense, but since Texas OLB Derrick Johnson decided to return to school there is no defensive player that fits their needs and provides enough value at this point in the draft. Williams is a big receiver that would be a nice fit opposite Santana Moss. He has an opportunity to step into the lineup immediately with Wayne Chrebet a major question mark due to injury and Curtis Conway coming off a subpar season.
    • Needs: LB, WR, CB, SS, OG
    • Hope might be available: WR Ro Williams
    • Other Options: LB J Vilma
    .
  13. Buffalo Bills

TE Kellen Winslow Jr - Miami (Fla)

Winslow's well publicized off the field tantrums could turn off some teams. There is no denying that Winslow is a gifted athlete that excels in the passing game and is a willing blocker. He would provide Drew Bledsoe with another much needed option.
    • Needs: WR, TE, G/C, QB, S, CB
    • Hope might be available: WR Re Williams
    • Other Options: WR M Clayton, DE W Smith
    .
  14. Chicago Bears

DT Vince Wilfork - Miami (Fla)

Wilfork drops because of concerns about his conditioning and stamina. He had an uneven season in which he disapeared more often than would be expected of a top prospect. That said, Wilfork has the skills to provide a huge presence in the middle of the defensive line. The best part is that he is not a bad fit in Lovie Smith's style of defense. Despite Wilfork's size he is really more of a one gap disrupter than a limitted two gap space eater.
    • Needs: DT, LT, CB, WR, RB, FB
    • Hope might be available: no one in particular
    • Other Options: OT N Dorsey, CB C Gamble, trade down
    .
  15. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

    LB Jonathan Vilma - Miami

Instinctive and athletic, Vilma looks like a nice fit for the Buccaneers. His only real negative is a lean frame which should be acceptable in Monte Kiffin's defense. Vilma has the skills to immediately provide an upgrade over Shelton Quarles in the middle and also serve as the heir apparent to Derrick Brooks on the weak side.
    • Needs: OT, LB, RB, WR, CB, DT, TE
    • Hope might be available: RB S Jackson, RB K Jones, WR Re Williams
    • Other Options: WR M Clayton, OT N Dorsey, DT R Starks
    .
  16. San Francisco 49ers

    DT Randy Starks - Maryland

Bryant Young isn't getting any younger and after him the depth chart at DT is very thin. Starks is an impressive athlete that is still learning the game. He has the bulk to hold up at the point of attack and the quickness to cause disruption in the backfield. Some have compared him to DeWayne Robertson, a player that came from virtual obscurity to end up as the 4th pick of last year's draft.
    • Needs: DT, WR, DE, CB, OG
    • Hope might be available: WR Re Williams
    • Other Options: WR M Clayton, CB C Gamble, DE W Smith
    .
  17. Cincinnati Bengals

CB Chris Gamble - Ohio St

Gamble comes off the board first among the corners because of his impressive combination of size, speed, and athleticism. He is not a polished player after spending almost as much time on offense as he did on defense before last season. Picking players based on potential over performance is always a risk. Gamble has shown enough despite his limited experience to make this a risk worth taking.
    • Needs: CB, DT, S, DE, LB, C
    • Hope might be available: DT R Starks
    • Other Options: DE W Smith, LB DJ Williams
    .
  18. New Orleans Saints

CB DeAngelo Hall - Virginia Tech

The Saints desperately need to add speed and athleticism to their defense. Hall is a tremendous athlete and perhaps the fastest player in this draft. This seems like a perfect match even taking into consideration that Hall is not quite as big as some would like and needs to refine his coverage skills.
    • Needs: CB, LB, DT, OL, RB
    • Hope might be available: CB C Gamble, DT R Starks
    • Other Options: LB DJ Williams
    .
  19. Minnesota Vikings

DE Will Smith - Ohio St

Smith is an accomplished weak side pass rusher that would immediately provide the Vikings defense with a dimension that it has been sorely lacking. He is an athletic lineman with considerable upside that is at his best playing in space and not out of his element dropping into coverage. Smith drops a bit farther than his athleticism would normally dictate because he did not always play up to his considerable skills.
    • Needs: CB, DE, WR, LB, OG, TE
    • Hope might be available: CB C Gamble, CB D Hall
    • Other Options: CB D Strait
    .
  20. Miami Dolphins

QB Philip Rivers - NC St

Before Senior Bowl week this pick looked like a reach. Now the Dolphins might have to get lucky for Rivers to fall this far. Rivers is a winner, plain and simple. He is a four year starter that was his teams MVP in five straight bowl games including the Senior Bowl. Everyone knows that Rivers has an unorthodox delivery that worries some scouts. He also has a quick release and more than adequate arm strength. Probably more important than any physical attribute that Rivers possesses is his uncanny ability to manage a game.
    • Needs: QB, OL, WR, LB
    • Hope might be available: no one in particular
    • Other Options: WR M Clayton, OT N Dorsey
    .
  21. New England Patriots (from Baltimore)

    CB Derrick Strait - Oklahoma

Strait won both the Nagurski and Thorpe awards. He is probably the most NFL ready of the top CB prospects and should be able to contribute immediately. Strait slips farther than his collegiate accomplishments would normally warrant because his size/speed ratio does not excite some scouts. While corner may not be the biggest need for the Patriots, having Strait fall into their laps adds solid depth to the position. It also means that Eugene Wilson can definitely stay at safety. The Patriots have 3 more selections in the top 63 picks of a very deep draft to address more glaring needs.
    • Needs: RB, OG, ILB, CB/FS, NT
    • Hope might be available: RB S Jackson
    • Other Options: OL V Carey, WR M Clayton, LB K Dansby, trade up
    .
  22. Dallas Cowboys

    DE Antwan Odom - Alabama

This is a worst case scenario for the Cowboys. Carnell Williams decided to return to Auburn. Marcus Spears and Marquise Hill are both returning to BCS Champion LSU. None of the top RBs or defensive linemen have fallen farther than expected. Even though this might be a bit early for Odom, big defensive ends that can get to the QB are not easy to find. The main knock on Odom is that he often struggles at the point of attack against the run despite his size. He could have probably used another year in college to get stronger and improve that facet of his game.
    • Needs: RB, QB, DE, OG, CB, DT
    • Hope might be available: RB S Jackson, DE W Smith, DT R Starks
    • Other Options: OL V Carey, RB C Perry
    .
  23. Seattle Seahawks

    LB Karlos Dansby - Auburn

Dansby possesses the physical skills to develop into a complete linebacker. He has the speed and agility to rush the passer from the edge or drop into coverage. He also has the frame to add some bulk to hold up better against the run at the point of attack. At the least Dansby would provide depth and an eventual successor to Chad Brown. He could also be given the chance to compete with DD Lewis should Randall Godfrey not return causing Anthony Simmons to move inside.
    • Needs: DE, CB, LB, S, G/C, WR
    • Hope might be available: DE A Odom, CB D Strait
    • Other Options: WR M Clayton, CB D Robinson
    .
  24. Denver Broncos

    WR Michael Clayton - LSU

Clayton has all the attributes to develop into a gamebreaker. He arguably possesses as high a ceiling as any of the other top wideouts in this draft despite being less refined. Rod Smith isn't getting any younger and it is hard to envision Ed McCaffery returning. Clayton gives the Broncos another young receiver to go along with Ashley Lelie.
    • Needs: WR, S, CB, OG, DT
    • Hope might be available: CB D Strait
    • Other Options: S S Jones, DB M Ware, WR R Woods
    .
  25. Green Bay Packers

    CB/S Matt Ware - UCLA

Ware started every game of his college career, becoming the first true freshman at UCLA to ever start for the entire season. He has experience at both CB and safety. Ware is an excellent athlete for his size that even got some snaps at WR and as an option QB in short yardage situations. It would be enticing to try a player with Ware's size at corner depending on how fast he times in the 40. Then again the Packers could just put him at safety and let him try to win a starting job next to Darren Sharper.
    • Needs: DE, S, QB, CB, LB, OG
    • Hope might be available: DE A Odom, QB P Rivers
    • Other Options: S S Jones
    .
  26. St. Louis Rams

CB Dunta Robinson - South Carolina

Robinson is steadily climbing up draft boards based on a senior campaign during which he flashed solid athleticism and big play capabilities. While his size and speed do not stand out, both are more than adequate. Robinson plays a physical style and is strong in run support. He does have some work to do to improve his consistency in coverage.
    • Needs: CB, TE, OG, LB, DE
    • Hope might be available: CB M Ware
    • Other Options: OL V Carey, CB W Poole, TE B Troupe
    .
  27. Tennessee Titans

OT Nat Dorsey - Georgia Tech

This pick would be a major gamble. Dorsey is a project that has the size and agility to develop into a franchise left tackle. The problem is that he never translated his enormous physical gifts into on the field dominance. The Titans are thin on the offensive line and need to start developing some young players. The problem is that because of cap concerns they might have to draft someone ready to play immediately.
    • Needs: DT, OL, WR, OLB, RB
    • Hope might be available: OT N Dorsey
    • Other Options: OL V Carey, DT M Tubbs, LB DJ Williams, WR R Woods
    .
  28. Philadelphia Eagles

WR Rashaun Woods - Oklahoma St

Woods was an ultra-productive collegian that does not have the size/speed numbers that most teams covet. His decision to forego the Senior Bowl was a little curious for a player that needs to prove to scouts that he can be more than a complimentary receiver. At the very least Woods should provide the Eagles with some consistency which isn't the strong point of their current wideouts.
    • Needs: WR, DT, LB, OG
    • Hope might be available: no one in particular
    • Other Options: DT M Tubbs, LB DJ Williams
    .
  29. Indianapolis Colts

    LB DJ Williams - Miami

Williams started his college career as a FB before moving to the defensive side of the ball. Although not as productive or instinctive as his college teamate Jonathon Vilma, Williams has an enticing combination of size and speed. His upside is just too good to pass up at this point even though the Colts would really like an upgrade at middle linebacker instead of an outside linebacker.
    • Needs: LB, DT, CB, OG
    • Hoped might be available: LB J Vilma
    • Other Options: CB W Poole, DT M Tubbs
    .
  30. Kansas City Chiefs

    CB Will Poole - USC

Anyone that watched the Chiefs lose to the Colts in the playoffs knows that they need a serious upgrade on defense. Poole began the year with a low profile after starting his career at Boston College and spending a year at a junior college before ending up at USC. He is a very good athlete and solid tackler that performed at a very high level under the pressure of the Trojans drive to the co-national championship.
    • Needs: CB, DT, WR, QB, DE
    • Hope might be available: CB D Robinson
    • Other Options: WR L Evans, DT M Tubbs
    .
  31. Carolina Panthers

WR Michael Jenkins - Ohio St

Having seven defensive backs and three linebackers already off the board in the first thirty picks causes the Panthers to switch gears. Jenkins is a big possession receiver that improved his stock during Senior Bowl week. He would provide another option to the oft injured and inconsistent Mushin Muhammad opposite deep threat Steve Smith.
    • Needs: CB, FS, LB, WR, OG
    • Hope might be available: CB W Poole, DB M Ware, LB DJ Williams
    • Other Options: S S Jones, LB T Lehman, C N Vasher
    .
  32. New England Patriots

    OL Vernon Carey - Miami

Having Carey fall to the last pick of the first round after seriously considering him with the 21st pick would be a stroke of luck. Carey is a huge road grader that shows surprising agility for his size. He is a versatile lineman with experience at both guard and tackle. Carey never quits and plays with a mean streak which should endear him to Bill Belicheck.
    • Hope might be available: LB K Dansby, CB W Poole
    • Other Options: RB C Perry, OG C Snee

Round 2

  1. Houston Texans (from Oak) - used in 2003 supplemental draft
  2. Arizona Cardinals - DT Marcus Tubbs - Texas
  3. New York Giants - LB Teddy Lehman - Oklahoma
  4. San Diego Chargers - DT Dwan Edwards - Oregon
  5. Detroit Lions - G Chris Snee - Boston College
  6. Cleveland Browns* - TE Ben Troupe - Florida
  7. Atlanta Falcons*- DT Chad Lavalais - LSU
  8. Jacksonville Jaguars - CB Nathan Vasher - Texas
  9. Houston Texans - S Sean Jones - Georgia
  10. Washington Redskins - RB Chris Perry - Michigan
  11. New York Jets - LB Michael Boulware - Florida St
  12. Buffalo Bills - WR Lee Evans - Wisconsin .
  13. Pittsburgh Steelers

    CB Ahmad Carroll - Arkansas

Rarely does a player fit a need as well as Carroll fits with the Steelers. He is a physical corner with nice size and blazing speed that can blitz off the edge. The biggest knock on Carroll is over aggressiveness. He has a reputation for sometimes giving up the big play when trying to make something happen. That is a fault that can be lived with in a young player as long as he is willing to work at playing a more controlled game.
    • Other Options: DL M Askew, C J Grove, RB G Jones, OT M Starks
    .
  14. Oakland Raiders (from TB) - DT Darnell Dockett - Florida St
  15. San Francisco 49ers - WR Derrick Hamilton - Clemson
  16. Chicago Bears - CB Keith Smith - McNeese St
  17. New Orleans Saints - LB Dontarrious Thomas - Auburn
  18. Cincinnati Bengals - C Jake Grove - Va Tech
  19. Minnesota Vikings - CB Jeremy LeSueur - Michigan .
  20. Baltimore Ravens

    OT Max Starks - Florida

RT Orlando Brown did not endear himself to the coaching staff or front office with his lack of control in the playoff loss to the Titans. An upgrade on Bennie Anderson at RG is also needed. Starks is a huge mauler that could fit in at either RT or RG in the Ravens power running game.
    • Needs: WR, RG, DL, RT, CB
    .
  21. Dallas Cowboys - RB Greg Jones - Florida St
  22. Seattle Seahawks - WR Devard Darling - Washington St
  23. Denver Broncos - S Stuart Schweigert - Purdue
  24. Green Bay Packers - DE Dave Ball - UCLA
  25. New England Patriots (from Mia) - RB Cedric Cobbs - Arkansas
  26. Tennessee Titans - DT Matthias Askew - Michigan St
  27. Philadelphia Eagles - LB Demorrio Williams Nebraska
  28. Indianapolis Colts - DT Igor Olshansky - Oregon
  29. New Orleans Saints (from StL) - DT Donnell Washington - Clemson
  30. Kansas City Chiefs - WR Devery Henderson - LSU
  31. Carolina Panthers - CB Keiwan Ratliff - Florida
  32. New England Patriots - LB Rod Davis - Southern Miss

Round 3

  1. Arizona Cardinals - CB Ricardo Colclough - Tusculum
  2. New York Giants - OT Jacob Rogers - USC
  3. San Diego Chargers - OT Tony Pape - Michigan
  4. Oakland Raiders - S Brandon Everage - Arkansas
  5. Cleveland Browns* - RB Julius Jones - Notre Dame
  6. Atlanta Falcons* - DT DeMarco McNeil - Auburn
  7. Jacksonville Jaguars - LB Keyaron Fox - Georgia Tech
  8. Houston Texans - CB Joey Thomas - Montana St
  9. Washington Redskins - TE Ben Watson - Georgia
  10. Detroit Lions - S Madieu Williams - Maryland
  11. Buffalo Bills - QB JP Losman - Tulane .
  12. Pittsburgh Steelers

    OT Carlos Joseph - Miami

Joseph is the brother of Giants DT William Joseph. He is a strong, athletic lineman that has the body to significantly add to his current 320 pounds. Joseph has some problems with speed rushers and would probably be better off on the right side. That should be alright as long as Marvel Smith can stay healthy. Like his brother, Joseph needs to improve his focus on an every down basis. Taking a chance on it all coming together for him is a much better gamble in the third round than the gamble the Giants took last year on William in the first round.
    • Other Options: DL T Anderson, ILB R Seigler, FS J Shivers, RB Q Wilson
    .
  13. New York Jets - S Jason Shivers - Arizona St
  14. San Francisco 49ers - OG Justin Smiley - Georgia
  15. Chicago Bears - WR James Newson - Oregon St
  16. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - RB Quincy Wilson - West Va
  17. Cincinnati Bengals - DT Tim Anderson - Ohio St
  18. New Orleans Saints - RB Michael Turner - Northern Illinois
  19. Minnesota Vikings - WR Ernest Wilford - Virginia Tech
  20. Dallas Cowboys - OG Stephen Peterman - LSU
  21. Seattle Seahawks - DE Shaun Phillips - Purdue
  22. Denver Broncos - OG Sean Locklear - NC St
  23. Green Bay Packers - QB Cody Pickett - Washington
  24. Miami Dolphins - OT Kelly Butler - Purdue
  25. Baltimore Ravens - WR Keary Colbert USC
  26. Philadelphia Eagles - DT Darrell Campbell - Notre Dame
  27. Indianapolis Colts - CB Greg Brooks - Southern Mississippi
  28. St Louis Rams - TE Chris Cooley - Utah St
  29. Tennessee Titans - RB Mewelde Moore - Tulane
  30. Kansas City Chiefs - DT Tommy Kelley - Mississippi State
  31. Carolina Panthers - LB Richard Seigler - Oregon St
  32. New England Patriots - DT Isaac Sopoaga - Hawaii
*Order to be determined by coin flip.

Second Day

4.106 Pittsburgh Steelers FS Arnold Parker - Utah

Parker is sort of a free safety version of Ike Taylor. He is big, fast, and athletic with a very high upside. Parker started at safety as a sophomore before moving to corner for the last two seasons. He got by against MWC competition because of his incredible recovery speed, but he does not seem to have the fluidity or instincts to develop into a shut down corner at the pro level. As a free safety he combines the speed to cover the whole field with the coverage skills to match up against tight ends and slot receivers.
  • Other Options:
    RB Brandon Miree - Pittsburgh
CB Randy Jordan - Kansas St
FS Etric Pruitt - Southern Miss
    G/T Alan Reuber - Texas A&M
    TE Kris Wilson - Pittsburh
5.140 Pittsburgh Steelers OG Regis Crawford - Arizona St

Crawford was a three year starter that played all along the offensive line during his career. He was the primary backup at LG and C as a true freshman. Excelled at RG as a sophomore and senior. Unselfishly started at LT out of necessity for 14 games as a junior. Crawford is a hard worker that never gives up on a block and plays with a mean streak. His size, speed, and athleticism are all more than adequate which produces a solid total package even though no indivdual physical characteristic really stands out.
  • Other Options:
FS Will Allen - Ohio St
TE Ben Hartsock - Ohio St
OLB Maurice Jones - South Fla
C/G Alex Stepanovich - Ohio St
    OLB Raheem Orr - Rutgers
6.171 Pittsburgh Steelers NT Chad Pugh - TCU

Pugh is a one dimensional run stuffer. A two-gap lineman that can tie up more than one blocker and free others to make plays. He is limitted by a lack of quickness and pass rushing ability. Pugh does not fit into every scheme, but really looks like a perfect fit as a two down 3-4 NT. He would serve both as solid depth and as an insurance policy behind Casey Hampton.
  • Other Options:
    OT Kirk Chambers - Stanford
    ILB Lewis Moore - Pittsburgh
    OLB Uyi Osunde - Connecticut
    FB Lousaka Polite - Pittsburgh
FS JR Reed - South Fla
6.188 Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jason Peters - Arkansas

There is a good possibility that Jay Riemersma and Mark Bruener will not return. Jerame Tuman is an adequate starter, but depth is needed. Peters looks like a perfect fit if the Steelers are really committed to returning to the power running game. He is listed at 6'5", 320 pounds and could always move to tackle if he fails at TE. He is faster and more agile than you would expect for a player his size. Peters caught 21 passes as a senior. He would be an intriguing weapon in the red zone in addition to providing an incredible presence in the running game.

    I/OLB Jorge Cordova - Nevada
    FS Medford Moorer - Colorado
OLB Greg Richmond - OK St
    C AJ Ricker - Missouri
    CB Shawntae Spencer - Pittsburgh
7.202 Pittsburgh Steelers DE/OLB Tony Hargrove - Ga Tech

Hargove is an interesting hybrid DE/OLB prospect that the Steelers might honestly not even consider. He sat out the season after being declared academically ineligible and entered the draft rather than returning to school. Although his lack of playing experience is an issue, Hargrove possesses the size, speed, and athletcism of a first day pick. Of course his character and desire have to be questioned.
