Draft Value Board - Offense

April 16, 2004 by Steel Haven

  Round 1 Round 2 Round 3
QB Eli Manning - Mississippi
*Ben Roethlisberger - Miami, Ohio
Phil Rivers - NC St
JP Losman - Tulane Matt Schaub - Virgina
Steelers Notes: Would be hard pressed to pass should either Rivers (6'4.6", 224, 4.97)+ or Roethlisberger (6'4.7", 240, 4.81) be available at pick 11. Rivers appears to be the front runner among the two in the minds of the Steelers FO according to most sources. A recent report in PFW does suggest the Steelers apparent ranking of Rivers over Roethlisberger could be a smoke screen. Whether either will be available at 11 has come into question recently and the Steelers do not seem willing to move up for either. The Chargers, Raiders, Giants, and Browns could all take a QB and the Bills could be willing to trade up ahead of the Steelers for a shot at finding Bledsoe's eventual replacement. Losman (6'2.2", 224, 4.71) might provide a fall back position at 44, but his stock seems to be rising and he might slip into the bottom of the first round. Schaub (6'5", 243, 5.02) is a smart player that throws an accurate short ball but lacks top arm strength and is immobile. He seems best suited for a dink-and-dunk WCO.
RB *Steven Jackson - Oregon St
*Kevin Jones - Virginia Tech
Chris Perry - Michigan
Greg Jones - Florida St
*Maurice Clarett - Ohio St
Tatum Bell - OK St
Julius Jones - Notre Dame
Michael Turner - Northern Ill
Cedric Cobbs - Arkansas
Quincy Wilson - WVU
Steelers Notes: After renegotiating with the Bus and signing Staley the possibility of taking a first day RB appears minimal. Greg Jones (6'1.3", 249, 4.63) could be a slight possibility at 44 because he seems to fit perfectly into the power running game that Cowher wants to feature. Turner (5'10.2", 232, 4.51), Cobbs (6'0.1", 232, 4.6) or Wilson (5'9.2", 221, 4.66) would be worthy of consideration if they fall a bit into the top of the 4th round.
WR *Larry Fitzgerald - Pitt
Roy Williams - Texas
*Mike Williams - USC
*Reggie Williams - Washington
*Michael Clayton - LSU
Lee Evans - Wisconson
Rashaun Woods - OK St
Michael Jenkins - Ohio St
Devery Henderson - LSU
*Devard Darling - Washington St
Keary Colbert USC
*Derrick Hamilton - Clemson
Jerricho Cotchery - NC St
Ernest Wilford - Va Tech
*PK Sam - Florida St
Steelers Notes: Evans (5'10.7", 207, 4.44), Woods (6'2.1", 202, 4.55), and Colbert (6'0.7", 207, 4.47) were brought in to Pittsburgh for a visit which led to alot of speculation about the future of Burress after next season when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. This is a deep and talented receiver class, but it is still highly unlikely that Evans or Woods will make it all the way to pick 44. That also might be a little high for Colbert. A move down in the 1st round or a trade of Burress on draft day could of course shuffle the deck. Just for the record, the FO vehemently denies any interest in trading Burress. Hamilton (6'2.6", 194, 4.43) and Sam (6'3.2", 204, 4.48) are a couple of interesting developmental prospects in round 3. Both need to work on improving their consistency after declaring early for the draft.
TE *Kellen Winslow Jr - Miami Ben Troupe - Florida
Ben Watson - Georgia
Kris Wilson - Pitt
Ben Hartsock - Ohio St
Steelers Notes: An upgrade is needed here, but the TE has not been a major part of the passing game since Eric Green left town. Using a first day pick on the position does not seem like a wise use of resources unless Whisenhunt seriously plans to change some things. Winslow (6'3.7", 247, 4.55) is a true difference maker. His availability at 11 is unlikely even though he was brought in for a visit. Troupe (6'4.6", 262, 4.68) and Wilson (6'2.2", 246, 4.62) are accomplised receivers that would need to work on improving their blocking skills to play in the Steelers scheme. Watson (6'3.3", 258, 4.53) did not always live up to expectations at Georgia, but he is an awesome physical specimen that is worth consideration at 44. Hartsock (6'4", 263, 4.82) is an overacheiver that would provide nice value if he slipped into the fourth round.
OT Robert Gallery - Iowa
*Shawn Andrews - Arkansas
Vernon Carey - Miami (OG)
Jacob Rogers - USC
*Kelly Butler - Purdue
*Nat Dorsey - Ga Tech
Max Starks - Florida (OG)
Adrian Jones - Kansas
Steelers Notes: Andrews (6'4.4, 245, 5.28) and Carey (6'4.3", 335, 5.33) stand out as first day possibilities that could step in immediately at RT. To get either a trade is probably necessary since they are not worth the 11th pick and will likely be unavailable at 44. Andrews was originally viewed as a top 10 pick before his stock plummetted after he failed out of school and ballooned to 400 pounds. He has worked hard to solidify his position as a mid-first rounder. Carey's stock slipped a bit after moving inside to OG as a senior and not performing up to expectation. He will probably drop out of the first round, but the chances of him making it all the way to 44 seem remote. The Steelers could surprise by waiting till the second day to take a tackle if they can't get their hands on Andrews or Carey. Rogers (6'6.1", 307) is more of a technician and finesse blocker than mauler. Butler (6'7.2", 324, 5.15) and Dorsey (6'7", 322, 5.47) are projects that will likely need time to develop. Starks (6'7", 350, 5.59) has the physical characteristics the Steelers are looking for and is a 3rd round possibility although his lack of athleticism makes him a bit of a reach at 75. Jones (6'4.2", 296, 4.97) is an athletic tackle that lacks the bulk to step in immediately on the right side.
OG *Justin Smiley - Georgia *Chris Snee - Boston College Sean Locklear - NC St
Adrien Clark Ohio St
Steelers Notes: Need to add depth in the interior of the offensive line because of Hartings degenerative knee and Simmons battle with diabetes. Cowher reportedly took a liking to Snee (6'2.6", 314, 5.10) at the combine. He is a powerful blocker with impressive athleticism and a mean streak. Snee would present solid value at pick 44, but more pressing needs make it highly unlikely that a guard will be picked on the first day.
OC   Jake Grove - Va Tech
Steelers Notes: Grove (6'3.3", 303, 5.19) is a borderline first rounder that would provide excellent value if available at 44. Grove could also play OG and the reasons for taking or not taking him are basically the same as the reasons for taking or not taking Snee.

BJ Symons - Texas Tech
Jack Tomco - SE Missouri St
Bradlee Van Pelt - Colorado St
Benji Walker - Vanderbilt
Steelers Notes: If the QB position is not addressed on the first day expect the depth chart to remain the same as last year. There is really no reason to take a second day developmental project with Brian St. Pierre already on the roster.

Jonathan Smith - Washington St
Joel Tudman - Texas A&M Commerce
Brandon Warfield - Utah
Kirwin Watson - Fordham
Steelers Notes: Carthon (5'11.3", 224, 4.52), the son of Cowboy's offensive coordinator Maurice, is a solid between the tackles runner that can catch the ball. He is the one second day back that has improved his stock in the off season. None of the other second day backs really did anything on the field during the season or in the post season to stand out. Moore (5'10.5", 209, 4.61) and Russell (5'7", 195, 4.55) could find a place in the league as 3rd down backs. Echemenendu (5'10.6", 226) and Miree (5'11.7, 226, 4.59) are possible everydown backs. Echemandu is recovering from a broken leg and was unable to workout in the off season.
FB Troy Flemming - Tennessee (RB)

Travis Wilson - Kansas St
*Mark Pierce - Arkansas

Brandon Johnson - Auburn
Luke Lawton - McNeese St
Vonta Leach - East Carolina
Brad Lee - Bethune Cookman
Kase Luzar - Virginia
Greg Toal - Boston College
Ivan Williams - Texas (RB)
Steelers Notes: The resigning of Krieder means there is no reason to draft a pure FB. Fleming (5'11.6", 227, 4.48) showed solid running skills in the post season and could be of interest as a possible developmental HB.

Jafar Williams - Maryland
George Wilson - Arkansas
*Chris Wright - OK St
Lance Young - Iowa St
Kevin Youngblood - Clemson
Steelers Notes: Expect at least one receiver to be drafted for the future, if not on the first day then on the second day. Francis (5'9.1", 198, 4.33) caught alot of passes in the spread offense and put himself on the map in spite of his short stature with blazing times at the combine. Luke (5'11.1", 190, 4.33) and Parker (5'10.3", 179, 4.35) also opened some eyes in the post season despite a lack of size. Some second day receivers with good size/speed ratios that could be considered to develop for a year behind Burress are Morant (6'4", 229, 4.56), Watts (6'1.6", 186, 4.46), Starling (6'0.5", 193, 4.49), Carter (6'4", 207, 4.40), Moore (6'5.5", 211, 4.55), Mann (6'1.4", 191, 4.51) and Hackett (6'2.4", 199, 4.51). Receivers that lack blazing speed yet possess intriguing size are Wilford (6'3.5", 226, 4.71), Whittaker(6'4.2, 234, 4.62) and Krause (6'2.4", 244, 4.65). Wilford needed two individual workouts to get his time down to 4.71 after running a 4.81 at the combine and watching his stock drop from a possible second rounder into the second day. Taylor (6'1.3", 203) is 5 months off ACL surgery and has not worked out.
TE *Jason Peters - Arkansas (T/G)
Chris Cooley - Utah St
Ben Utech - Minnesota
Tim Euhus - Oregon St
Sean Ryan - Boston College
Courtney Anderson - San Jose St
Jeff Dugan - Maryland
*Michael Gaines - Central Fla
Ronnie Ghent - Louisville
Brett Pierce - Stanford
Keith Willis - Va Tech
Kyle Acker - Salisbury St
Mike Brake - Akron
Matt Brandt - Miami, Ohio
Bobby Blizzard - North Carolina
Chris Coleman - Alabama St
Casey Cramer - Dartmouth
Brock Edwards - Texas
Nick Eller - Eastern Ill
John Foschi - Ga Tech
Thomas Hill - Kansas St
Alex Holmes - USC
Josh Joerg - La Lafayette
Tory Johnson - West Va
Matt Kranchick - Penn St
Nate Lawrie - Yale
Ben Moa - Utah
Jason Rader - Marshall
Mike Walker - Minn, Morris
Kevin Zureki - Eastern Mich
Steelers Notes: Peters (6'4.4", 328, 4.88) is one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft. He has worked out for teams at both TE and the offensive line. He doesn't fit into many schemes at TE and would be a project on the offensive line which will probably drop him to the second day. He does fit the profile of a Steelers TE albeit on a larger than normal scale and would be tough to pass on if avaliable at 107. Cooley (6'3.7", 262, 4.79), Euhus (6'5", 249, 4.89), Ryan (6'4.4", 268, 4.99), and Anderson (6'6", 269, 4.81) all fit in with the traditional view of a Steelers TE. Any would be worth a flier at various points on the second day. Utech (6'6.1", 249) was a top prospect that had a disappointing senior campaign and has been unable to workout due to injury. Of course the current FO doesn't like to gamble on injured players no matter what the upside.

Chris Murphy - California
Mark Pera - Auburn
Brandon Phillips - Arizona
Kevin Sampson - Syracuse
Casey Shelton - Iowa St
Steve Stewart - Michigan St
Drew Strojny - Duke
Dan Vili Waldrop - Nebraska
Steelers Notes: Wharton (6'3.4", 311, 5.15) had problems at the Senior Bowl, but showed a bit better in combine workouts despite having a body that looks a bit soft. Stacy Andrews (6'6.1", 342, 5.11), the brother of Shawn, is an interesting developmental prospect with tremendous upside that originally went to college on a track scholarship. Pape (6'6", 324, 5.23) and Joseph (6'5.7", 345, 5.33) have not had good offseasons and their stock seems to be dropping. Both have a shot to be useful on the right side on a team that features a power running attack. Olivea (6'2.7", 302, 5.32) lacks prototypical height and may have to move inside. Chambers (6'7.2", 309, 5.52) and Bubin (6'6.4", 308, 5.14) would provide solid value in the sixth round. Chambers visited Pittsburgh.

Joe Washington - Western Kentucky
Nick Zuniga - North Texas St
Steelers Notes: Rueber (6'6.2", 323, 5.38) and Bell (6'4.6", 302, 5.24) are interesting prospects because they have the ability to play inside or move out to RT. Peterman (6'4", 312, 5.46) got a lot of positive press during LSU's national championship run, but he is very stiff and could have problems with penetrating interior defenders at the next level. Crawford (6'2", 316, 6.05) ran the slowest 40 at the combine, but he is a hard working sleeper with decent athleticism that started at 4 different positions in his college career.
OC Alex Stepanovich - Ohio St (OG)
Nick Leckey - Kansas St (OG)
Scott Wells - Tennessee
Josh Sewell - Nebraska
Nick Hardwick - Purdue
AJ Ricker - Missouri
Toby Cecil - Texas Tech

Dave Pearson - Michigan
Hugh Reilly - Ga Tech

Nick Romeo - Syracuse
Nick Seitze - Kentucky
Brent Swaggert - Montana St
LaMons Walker - San Jose St
Dan Weaver - Oregon
Steelers Notes: Stepanovich (6'3.3", 304, 5.23) is a hard working brawler that is best in a confined space. Wells (6'1.7", 300, 5.30) and Sewell (6'1.5", 301, 5.09) have a nice combination of power and athleticism despite lacking ideal height. Sewell is a late bloomer that transferred from Indiana State and in the span of 9 months went from undrafted free agent to solid day two selection. All three seem to have at least as high a ceiling as Okobi. Leckey (6'2.7", 290, 5.25) needs to get stronger.

Others are listed in alphabetical order
*Underclassmen
+All measurements are either from the combine or a supervised pro day workout. Reported forty time is an average of all 40 times when more than one were run. Reported height is to the eighth of an inch where available. So a height of 6'4.6" is 6 feet, 4 and 6/8th inches.

#These tables are intended to give an estimate of how many players are usually drafted at each position in each round. Draft classes are different so the numbers should not be taken literally. This is really being included because more players than can actually be drafted are listed in the draft value boards. This is especially true in later rounds where the difference in value between prospects is much less pronounced and more players than can actually be drafted in a specific round based on raw numbers carry a grade for that round. Because there are only so many draft slots players with a low 3rd round grade will be available on the second day and players with a 5th or 6th round grade could well come off the board in the 7th round or go undrafted.
