Good OL News!

Postby No l Gravity l » Thu Aug 07, 2008 12:45 am

The Steelers' first-team offense improved from 0-for-4 to 2-for-3 in scoring touchdowns from the 1.5-yard line against the first-team defense on Tuesday night at St. Vincent College. Head coach Mike Tomlin had an easy time identifying the difference-maker in the second live goal-line drill of camp.

"I think that No. 68 had something to do with that," Tomlin said.

With Chris Kemoeatu lined up at left guard, running backs Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall found the end zone. The defense rallied for three consecutive stops after substitutions were made on both sides and won the drill, 4-2, but Tomlin still raved about No. 68.

"We pulled him, it is what he does," Tomlin said. "He's a road-grader. He's a violent run blocker, and we ran behind him."

• Cornerback William Gay (groin), cornerback Deshea Townsend (groin), linebacker Anthony Trucks (lower back) and safety Anthony Smith (groin) didn't practice yesterday. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (groin) was once again limited (no 11-on-11 work). Tomlin characterized Gay as day-to-day, said Townsend and Trucks should be back today and that Smith is in a wait-and-see situation. Roethlisberger, Tomlin said, will play in Friday night's preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. "Briefly, yes," Tomlin said. Outside linebacker James Harrison (groin), defensive end Brett Keisel (groin), guard Kendall Simmons (shoulder), offensive tackle Marvel Smith (coach's decision), wide receiver Limas Sweed (hamstring), linebacker Mike Humpal (hamstring) and tight end Dezmond Sherrod (neck) returned to practice yesterday.

• Offensive lineman Trai Essex was called for a false start, negating a carry by running back Gary Russell that failed to find the end zone. Russell was denied twice in two carries. ... Parker's TD run was his lone carry in either of the two goal-line drills of camp. ... Mendenhall scored on one of two carries after going 0-for-3 on Sunday. ... Humpal came up with a big hit on running back Justin Vincent on the sixth play to seal the drill for the defense.

• Defensive lineman Jordan Reffett wasn't on campus Monday or yesterday due to his wife giving birth to a child.

"That is a legitimate excuse, I think," Tomlin said
