World Series of Poker

Postby SteelTank » Fri Jun 20, 2008 2:16 am

Hey Mill, Hammer, Trenches!

What's up?

I'm playing in the WSOP this year and I want to write an article on the main page for each day that I play. I don't have a link to the article upload page any longer - it's been a long time. The tourney starts July 3.

Anyway, I want to get something on the main page to get things rolling into training camp.

Also, Mill, make me moderator all ready.

Trenches, if you need any help with site maintenance - just let me know what I can do. I don't have the development environment you mentioned, but I might be able to get it on my laptop at work. What was it again? Are we using .NET or .php?

Anyway, if you guys can respond here or send me some info to my hotmail account...

Should be a good year.

Hey Tank!
welcome back.

You'll have to talk to Mill and Trenches about both the articles and mod thing. (I'm just a working stiff here.)
I could definately use some help keeping the place clean as the season approaches.

Good luck with the WSOP.

Here's a funny blog for you about one of the players:

Greg Raymer is a superior athlete to Javon Walker
By MJD / Shutdown Corner

Poker's not a sport? Poker players aren't athletes? Tell that to Greg Raymer. The 2004 World Series of Poker champion was attacked by muggers in his hotel room in the Bellagio in 2004, and he didn't end up in the back of someone's car, being dropped off in the street for no apparent reason.

From Norm Clarke at the Las Vegas Review-Journal:

Greg Raymer, the 2004 World Series of Poker main event champ, survived an ordeal of his own 31/2 years ago.

He was on the 20th floor of the Bellagio in December 2004 after leaving the poker room carrying more than $100,000 when two men tried to barge into his room.

The burly Raymer fought 'em off, but he believes he might have been killed had the assailants overcome him.

He was surprised to learn that surveillance cameras are not permitted in the hallways.

Raymer said he was told by security that because of privacy issues, the Nevada Gaming Commission doesn't allow it.

Greg Raymer, bad-ass vigilante crime-fighter. Who knew? Mike Matusow didn't know how close he came to getting his ass beat back in 2004.

I kid, of course, about Walker. I'm sure the situations were vastly different (whatever Walker's situation actually happened to be), and I make no judgments about the fighting abilities of Greg Raymer vs. those of Javon Walker.

It is interesting that there are, in fact, no security cameras in the Bellagio hallways, though. So theoretically, Walker could have been jacked right outside of his room with no surveillance footage of it in existence, which makes his story slightly more believable.

Still, when the alleged assailants dragged him out to the car, presumably, they had to go through a parking lot of a lobby or some place where there would be security footage. I don't know. They probably didn't spring for valet parking.

What's up Hammer?

I'll definately get a hold of Mill. See what the process is these days. Should be a good year.

I had no idea Raymer got attacked! I did hear he got quite a few death threats though the year he won. People are crazy and Javon Walker :dunce: is still a liar. There aint no way he got through the casino all beat up without being seen. Then again, maybe the security staff at the Bellagio are a bunch of Bronco fans.

Why dont you quit piping his schlong.... I could care less about continueing his thread because in a couple weeks when I get back it would still be here anyway seeing that there are so many good threads started every day. I get more Steeler info from other teams sites than you post here.
And just because you have been swapping spit together for years doesnt mean that it is related to FOOTBALL or the STEELERS . Quit having the feminine hissy fit.

LOL, a few days? Pretty confident, aren't we?

There is no way that Raymer story is true. They DO NOT give $100k in cash to a guy to walk away with. Well, I don't know that for a fact, but in a tournie, no way. Obviously you can, in theory (why would anyone want to) hit a 100k day at the poker table (or craps, or bj) and cash in your chips and request cash. But no way anyone with an ounce of sense takes that much in cash.

GL in the main event. I'm a professional poker player from Las Vegas. I played in the main event last year... it was alright I guess hah. As of now I haven't won a seat and I don't believe in buying in for 10k (I won a seat on stars last year) so I might not play it this year. I played an earlier 1500 and I might play the 1500 on monday though.

Also -the Greg Raymer story is 100 % true. This was a known story that happened. Somehow the assailants followed him and if they got him in his room or whatever they may have killed him. And it is very easy to walk around with 100k cash + after a tournament (although this incident with Raymer was not after a tournament this was after he cashed out from a cash game). Therefore Raymer either had casino chips or actual dollars with him when he was attacked.

And in the tournies they usually give you casino chips which you can cash out for as much as you want at a given time. Every time I have cashed in a tournament I have either taken chips (or cashed out the chips for cash). My friend just cashed for 150k in a tournament and he just took the chips with him afterwards.

Funny....When I cashed at a tournie in Caesar's, I got a check (and it was only 1k). You fill out a 1099 ( or whatever it is), and you get a check. Now, I'm sure you can cash that check, but who would? But I suppose Caesar's is the exception to the rule.

I live in Vegas, too. The ONLY reason to take cash is to cheat taxes (which, in a cash game is a real possibility). But in a tournie, you're on the hook regardless. So, with Raymer it was a cash game. More believable. I still doubt it.

Have you ever been to the Bellagio? Do you think you can just walk up to a room and tap on the door? That's a poker urban legend. The papers also reported Davon Walker got attacked in his hotel room.

The guys actually got arrested afterwards if I remember correctly. I know it's difficult to get up there but somehow they did. Whether they had a room already there or whatever I do not know but that story is actually surprisingly true.

You can receive a check but usually it's in chips. I play more cash games then tournaments but when I've cashed in a tournament I have always had the option. The last time I cashed in a Bellagio tournament they gave me chips which I then cashed out some immediately and took the rest to my backer for the tournament.

Also - I'm actually surprised no one has gotten robbed outside of the Rio. Most players carry a lot of cash on them and walking in the parking lot could be a disaster. Every time I leave there I am always looking over my shoulder because there is like never any security in the parking lot area and unless you valet you've got at least a few minute walk to your car.

Interesting. I'll have to see if I can find the story on Raymer. Yeah, tough to get up to the rooms but not impossible I suppose.

But like you said about the Rio, it is just beyond me why players carry around that much cash. I suppose it has to be because they are grossly underclaiming taxes, but in a tourney you have to fill out the 1099 or whatever so I see no reason to take that large amount in cash.

Good luck in the tourney. I'd like to give it a shot someday, but it would be tough for me to justify 10k. In fact, I kind of gave it up after a string of bad beats and cards. I was playing well enough, but just didn't feel like investing the time and riding out those drawdowns.

Gents,
I also used to live in Vegas back in the mid 90's - right when they went through that whole Family oriented B.S. I worked at the MGM. I actually took all of Steel Traps money playing poker over there one night when he was visiting. He wasn't too happy and I got busted for gambling in the place were I worked - I don't think that's a issue now.

Whenver I do go back, I pretty much stick to tourney poker and stay at the RIO. I won a small tourney at the RIO for $2500 about a year ago and had to fill out the 1099. I'll be staying at the RIO this year and my first day in the tourney is on Sunday, July 5.

I appreciate the good luck - I'll need it with so many players in the field. I think next year I may go out at the beginning and try to win my way in or play in one of the lower entry fee tournies. I was going to buy a house this year and didn't so I figured what the hell.

If I do make it far enough, I'll have a little stillers.com football at the table with me... Maybe I'll run into you guys.

It certainly isn't impossible to get up to the rooms, but Raymer should know better than not look around with 100k. He had all kinds of death threats when he won it all a few years back. I figured he would have been more wise.

hehe most the guys have good tax attornies... as a professional gambler we have lots of tax right offs (in fact im kinda stupid i really need to start saving all my receipts for just about ANYTHING you can think of).

actually one more fact about the raymer story (if i remember correctly cause this was so long ago) i actually think he didn't have that much cash on him and that he left his cash in the security deposit (players box) that you can have at the bellagio. im not 100 % positive on that though but i think he said he actually wont carry that much cash on him.

but yea bellagio has among the best security in town so it is really surprising. some of those crappier hotels in town have like no security at all and it's very easy to get up towards the rooms.

well i'm playin tomorrow's event (event 52 1500 NL) so i'd better go get some rest. hopefully i can do well in this so i can play the main event this year lol.
