Poll on Stadium turf

Postby SteelinPhilly » Mon Jun 30, 2008 1:10 pm

Why wasn't one of the options to make Pitt build its own stadium?

Because the stadium deal gave them the right to play on Heinz Field. I live in KC and the Chiefs were trying to make these kinds of concessions to get taxpayer money for a retractable dome. The team can't just renege on these promises.

Couple things here --

1. Pitt had already done the economic analysis and calculated that having its own stadium for 5 or at most 6 home games per year, was not a smart financial move. Contrast that with the Steelers, who have 2 home pre-season games and 8 reg. season games, plus the possibility of a home playoff game or 2.

2. Ever been to Pitt's campus?? There's no room there whatsoever. When they tore down Pitt Stadium it opened some space for Petersen Athletic Complex, which is a superb facility and is a revenue/profit generator. There now simply is no room for a football stadium on the crowded Pitt campus.

The partnership with the Steelers is a shrewed one. The only flaw is the insistence on a grass field......AND the insistence on allowing high schoolers to damage the field each Nov.
