Worst Starting QB To Win A Super Bowl?

Postby Steelers76 » Tue Jan 26, 2010 7:22 pm

Career Stats wise, who do you think was the worst Starting QB to win a Super Bowl? Just going from memory, I'm going to have to say Trent Dilfer in 2000 with Baltimore. Brad Johnson in 2002 with Tampa Bay would be second. Was there anybody with worse career stats to win a SB than those 2?

also, i'd be willing to go out on a limb and say roethlisberger's rating in SB XL (22.6) was the lowest for a winning QB.

In my opinion, passer ratings don't hold much water with the older guys since the league rules were so different. A guy like Namath could probably pick defenses apart if pass rushers had to prance around quarterbacks then like they do now, not to mention defensive backs not chuck receivers all the way down the field or hit "defenseless receivers" as they try to catch the ball.

Surprisingly, none of those Super Bowl winning quarterbacks was a terrible player in their time. You'd think one or two mediocre to bad QBs might have gotten lucky somewhere along the line, but they haven't. A case can definitely be made for Dilfer, but then again, he had a lengthy pro career in which he was a starter for most of it. He was generally a winner even though he doesn't have flashy statistics. Some of the other guys, like Rypien or D. Williams, didn't necessarily have good careers but played lights out during their Super Bowl seasons. Or, guys like Plunkett (or D. Williams) did so bad on terrible teams before they got on a good one and played well - Raiders and Redskins, respectively. Heck, Bradshaw is one of the worst-rated passers to win, and he has 4 rings. I think in his case it's a matter of the rules like Namath, and certainly, the fact of playing terrible at the beginning of a career on a bad team.

These Stats don't take into consideration the Defenses these QBs played.
Some of these guys played against all time great D's, others against teams with no defense, who got to the game based on their prolific offenses.

Even scarier thought: The NFL Network still sings the praises of Namath because he was cocky, and guaranteed the Super Bowl win his team got. Had he lost that game, he'd be villified, and we wouldn't be routinely subjected to NFL Network sucking Namath off by replaying the America's Game Episode honoring that Super Bowl win, over and over again.
Bruce Arians: Proudly carried the Honor of Short Bus All-Star 2007-2011. Good job, and glad you're gone Dumbfuck!!!!!

If you've noticed, the passer ratings have gradually increased over time. QB stats in Namath's day weren't as good, across the board, as they are today.
Whenever Tom Brady loses, it's always someone else's fault.
