Why was Leftwich more effective than Ben?

Postby Homer J » Mon Sep 22, 2008 9:55 am

In some of the back and forth on Sunday's disaster, it was pointed out that Lefty was much more effective than Ben.

Obviously, he was in the shotgun, which gave him a little more time to see the field and to throw. And he hadn't been running for his life all afternoon, getting stomped on and beat on. And he didn't hestitate as much and got rid of the ball sooner. It wasn't that Lefty wasn't blitzed - he was - but I didn't see any jailhouse blitzes where everybody came.

This is NOT a knock on Ben. Nor is this a stupid attempt to start up a QB controversy. It's just that Ben wasn't able to muster anything all day. And when Lefty came in, the team started moving the ball.

Any thoughts on why the team was moving backward with Ben - yet managed its only impressive drive with the backup?

its called the backup qb coming into garbage time when the team is down by 2 scores with a few minutes to play , what part of that are you having a hard time with?

Because Byron is a veteran Qb who UNDERSTANDS how to audible, call correct line adjustments and hit his hot route. Look at his 1st completion to Heath. Heaths head IMMEDIATELY turns around, that tells me that Leftwich called a hot route after recognizing where the blitz was coming from. How do you beat the blitz? You recognize where its coming from and you throw to the area the blitzer USED to occupy. Byron did that, Ben did not. Pressure bothers Ben so instead of looking downfield he looks at the blitz, you CANT be successful doing that and he wasnt. Wisenhunt said this about Ben, years ago. If you give Ben time, he wil hurt you, if you pressure Ben, he will help you. Simple

It wasnt garbage time sir, it was a 2 possesion game, Do you understand the meaning of the term "garbage time"?. The games outcome was still in doubt. Byron hurt them TWICE with beating the blitz and Jim Johnson backed off with the blitz for one play. Watch his 1st 3 passes the Eagles sent 6 and 7 blitzers. He hit Nate, Heath(2). Its called understanding of what going on on the field sir. Ben is not there yet.

taken from ed bouchette' s colum this morning in the post gazzette,

A leaping sack of Roethlisberger on the next series by safety Brian Dawkins knocked the ball out of his hands. Dawkins recovered and Akers eventually kicked another 31-yard field goal for a 15-6 lead.

Leftwich came on and, against no blitz, guided the Steelers to the Eagles' 22 where the drive ended on fourth down.

The problem for the Steelers now is not so much

Please at least watch the game before commenting
when there is 2 minutes left in the game and 1 team is trailing by 2 possesions with the ball on thier own 27, its called garbage time you stupid idiot!

Bouchette is wrong. Leftwich faced pressure on his first two pass attempts, which he completed.

Only then did Johnson back off...Scalaid is correct on this one.

1 extra guy on two plays is not the same as 6 plus guys collapseing a pocket before a 3 step drop is completed..

Thank you Jeemie! Hey darth I say what Ed wrote and I also wrote to his email address and informed him he was wrong. I WATCH ALL STEELER GAMES. Leftwich called hot routes. His 1st completion to Heath, heath came off the line and IMMEDIATELY turned his head as he knew he was the hot route and Byron hit him in stride. Same with Heaths 2nd reception and Nates. Byron took one sack (That wasnt a blitz either hunh? lmao) due to looking down field like Ben trying to make the big play, he shoulda got rid of it quickly as he had done the whole drive. Instead he turned a 3rd and 1 into a 3rd and 6. For the record "garbage time" is when the outcome of the game is no longer in doubt. We were in the game until Byron threw the ball in the dirt and missed an open, Nate Washington. I watched the game as I cited events from the game, not a incorrect journalist.

I saw two extra guys coming....and Lefty did take a slash across the throat. All that was clearly shown and commented on in the broadcast.

It wasn't garbage time or a prevent defense. But it clearly wasn't the jailhouse blitz the Ben was facing. With 3:30 to go and up by two scores, if you're on defense, you don't turtle, but you don't take any huge gambles. Lefty played well, and got better results than Ben.

And, since they needed two scores, Tomlin's refusal to go for the FG with a minute to go was inexcusable, but that's for another blog.

ben was 5 for 6 with no sacks on the first drive which makes this thread idiotic.

taking a 2 minute sample of the backup qb when the game is salted away is just beyond dumb, there is just no other way to put it!

typical fan response though ;)

The 1st drive we got a fumble from B-mac and how many games are won on the 1st drive? Point is moot.

LEFTWICH was playing against a PREVENT DEFENSE.

The eagles know leftwich sucks and couldnt even carry bens jockstrap so they basically DARED leftwich to beat them with his arm. guess what....he failed ....IN PREVENT......he had way more breathing room than ben and got dick.

eagles were NOT afraid of leftwich.

they showed it in their defense and proved it in execution.

scalaid you are a troll btw. you are deliberately saying things to anger people. you have no point...you have no passion. you just have a stick up your ASS.

Yeah Scalaid6, blame the entire shit-ass game on Ben. The more and more you do that, the more ridiculous you sound. You like we bring back Mommy Maddox? Krydell Stewart? I think they're available. Maybe even Neil O'DUMMASS will come out of retirement to lead the Black and Gold back to the Super Bowl. This team's got problems, but the least of those is it's quarterback. Try this link for some football knowledge:

So scalaid6 is Fiddy/El Tee/Spiker's latest incarnation.

No- he was NOT playing against a prevent defense. Do you actually watch any games?

They came at him on those first two plays like they were coming at Ben.

On the first play, Lefty audibled and called a hot route for Heath and hit him. The next play, he fired a quick strike to Washington.

Only then did the Eagles back off a bit....for a couple plays. At the end, they were bringing it again.

Jeemie , say this with me "the game was over when lefty got in there trailing by 2 scores starting from his own 27 with 2 minutes to go and 1 timeout"

only a complete idiot would think the eagles were not giving it a 50% effort at that point!

thier motor ran full tilt for 58 minutes and any human would turn it off at that point in the game, jeeeez !

some of you guys are funny

For someone who is known to have a long windup, Leftwich came in and threw on a two step drop. He was also not sacked over and over again and freaked out like ben was by the end of the game. If you think that the eagles were not giving 100% at that time, you need to think that assessment over. If the Steelers had gone for a FG instead of that stupid 4th down conversion, we would have been in a place to try an onside kick and possibly win this game. We were never out of this game until that point.
