Steelers Release Running Back; Promote Linebacker from Practice Squad

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers made a roster move today when they promoted rookie LB Patrick Bailey to their active roster.

Bailey (6-4, 235) spent the first two games of the season on the Steelers’ practice squad after originally signing with the team as an undrafted rookie free agent from Duke. He started 26 games and recorded 191 tackles (24.5 for losses), 8.5 sacks, one interception and four forced fumbles during his college career.

The Steelers made room on their roster for Bailey by releasing second-year RB Gary Russell. Russell originally made the Steelers roster as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2007.

Drafting Rashard Mendenhall AND picking up stud back Mewelde Moore we didnt really need a Gary Russell on the roster.

So much for Russell being such a great steal, etc. Gets cut. I thought he was better than Maroney with the Pats? Guess not

Obviously Tomlin is as concerned about special teams coverage as we have been for years. And he's putting his money where his mouth is.

Maybe we get Gary Russell back next week. Maybe not. :suxfingers:

But the important thing is that the Black and Gold not allow any big returns on punts and kickoffs. That's been the biggest difference between this year and last.....and the first two games were against teams with outstanding return men....

After years of sweating the special teams, we finally have a coach who seems to have turned the around. It's early, but Tomlin thinks enough of ST's to change his roster on a weekly basis to ensure he has the coverage he needs.

This is another example of that. :surockin: :surockin: :surockin:
