Colon or Starks? Pick your poison.

Postby Iron Gut » Tue Aug 19, 2008 10:43 pm

Neither Colon or Starks have done much this preseason to standout and take control of the RT position. That said, one of these stiffs gotta play.

Who do you go with?

Personally, I think Starks is the better choice of the two because his pass pro is superior to Colon. Yes, Max does get beat, but Colon gets beat a hell of alot more. With respect to run blocking, I beleive it is a wash or slightly in Colon's favor. However, the advantage is so slight that it doesn't overcome his penchant for getting our franchise QB killed.

Just my $.02
What do you all think?

Six Pack... err... Iron Gut,

You summed up my thoughts for me. I also give the slight edge to Starks but based off of very weak evidence. I feel this week's game will give us a better feel since the starters will be in for longer than 75 seconds.

Move Colon to right guard. Essex is the 6th man.
LT- Marvel
LG- Kemokickyou
C- Hartwig
RG- Colon
RT- Starks

I can't fault your logic at all there, Lamberto.

That indeed looks like a pretty strong starting five.

Thinking more about the Oline going into this season, I'm putting more and more confidence into Ben's ability to adjust to coverage at the line leaving less expectation of the OLine to perform at a higher level than recent seasons.

I have a feeling that we're going to see a lot more of what I've been craving to see for years: A lot of hot-route dink-n-dunk like passes to counter the blitz. (What works against could very well work for us. Think Santonio Holmes against the Iggles) This could really help ease tension on the pass-protection side of things, keeping the defense honest, so to speak.

It's certainly going to be interesting, any way you slice it. Maybe it's the Kool-Aid talking, but we have a lot of weapons to be accounted for. Hopefully, as the season goes, we'll see this schemeing taking place more and more, and in turn see Ben on his ass less and less.

Here we go!

Careful about posting a desire to evolve offensively. Many of the "old timers" here think that you need a 300lb running back and a QB who only throws on 3rd and long to be successful.

May their wrath avoid you this time as you repent for your blasphemy.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

Well....Javorskie Lane IS the top rated FULLback expected to come out of the draft next year, according to Lindy's.

I'm so weary of the OL this season. Although that lineup may work.

The line is going to be Smith, Kemo, Hartwig, Simmons, Colon

I have no idea why they won't consider Colon for RG. There must be a reason we don't know about.

That said, I am not as worried about the line as I expected to be.

Smith looks sharp and healthy, Kemo has been solid, Hartwig is an upgrade.

Simmons and Colon are still inconsistent, but they are better than last year. I suspect the Simmons improvement is a function of having a better center.

All in all, I don't see this group as being a huge problem this season. Unless, Smith, Kemo or Hartwig get hurt. Then we are most likely screwed.

Max Starks is the better RT IMO. He played alot of snaps last season and only gave up 1 sack. Colon on the other hand led the team with :o 13.
