Ward Wins Weekly Hard Hat Award (Game #12, vs. NY Jets)
Stiller WR Hines Ward is the winner of my weekly Hard Hat Award, given to the Stiller player who best embodies the iron-tough, hard-as-steel attitude of the steel workers inside the blast furnace of a still mill.
This past Sunday, Ward had what was most likely the best game of his 4-year career. Ward finished with 10 receptions for a career-high 124 yards, and also had 3 rushes for 14 yards. But, as you know, the Hard Hat is not based on mere numbers. Ward continually ran with the ball with the kind of zest, courage, and determination that I expect to see from a Pittsburgh Stiller. Time and time again, Ward was putting his head down and plowing into potential tacklers. Ward had a very nice 10-yard run on a direct snap late in the game, which helped the Stillers get in position for the final FG that put them up by 11. And Hines was at his best, when he took a basic curl and then quickly shifted his direction and raced to his left, and then went out of his way to blast into DB Marcus Coleman en route to a 29-yard gain. (see pics, below). What makes Ward's effort and performance all the more impressive is the fact that he suffered a deep thigh contusion during the game, yet fought with the coaching and medical staffs to get back onto the field (which he was successful at), and he continued to contribute and hit. This kind of ferocity and fire is what the Hard Hat is all about, and is what makes the Hard Hat Award the coveted award that it is.
Kudos to Hines for winning the weekly Hard Hat Award. Wear the Hard Hat proudly, Hines !!
